Melamchi Ghyang is one of the largest and most culturally significant Hyolmo villages in Helambu, famous for its ancient monastery and traditional stone architecture.

Melamchi Ghyang is one of the most important villages in the Helambu region, located at approximately 2,560 meters above sea level. The village is a cultural heartland of the Hyolmo people.

History

The village has a long and rich history dating back several centuries. It was one of the first Hyolmo settlements in the region and has been an important center of Buddhist learning and practice.

Monastery

The village is home to a historic gompa (Buddhist monastery) that is believed to be several hundred years old. The monastery contains ancient murals, thangka paintings, and Buddhist scriptures.

Architecture

Traditional Hyolmo houses in Melamchi Ghyang are built with:

  • Stone walls
  • Carved wooden window frames
  • Slate roofs
  • Central hearths for cooking and warmth

Getting There

Melamchi Ghyang can be reached by trekking from Sundarijal (on the outskirts of Kathmandu) in about 2-3 days, or from Melamchi pool Bazaar in about 1-2 days.
